Choosing a DAW

First things first, let's just define what a DAW is: DAW stands for Digital Audio Workstation and this is basically just the software you use to record and edit your recordings.

This could be anything from Garageband to Pro Tools and there's a lot of different options available now, which (while overwhelming at first) is a very good thing, because it means they are competitively priced and have lots of exciting potentials.

Looking for some guidance on what DAW to get started with or graduate to? You're in the right place! Below are my recommendations, depending on your budget and computer.

Free DAWs

Paid For DAWs

This is not an exhaustive list: If you're already using a DAW that isn't listed above and you like it, great! Keep going, you're all sorted.

Wondering which version of the paid for DAWs to choose? For all the above DAWs, you will be absolutely fine using the most basic, budget version of their software moving through Home Recording Academy. You can always upgrade to a more fancy version as and when you need to.
